In the latest AI technology news from the automotive world, a new lab is being founded by Volkswagen Group in a bid to generate new product ideas built upon artificial intelligence.

Volkswagen has announced that it is also in talks with a number of technology firms about collaborating on new AI features and products that may push artificial intelligence significantly forward in the automotive industry.

According to a statement released by Volkswagen, the lab could see new cooperation open up, including collaborating with technology giants in China, North America, and Europe.

We want to offer our customers genuine added value with artificial intelligence," says Oliver Blume, CEO of Volkswagen Group. “Collaboration with technology companies is crucially important for us. In future, we intend to simplify cooperation in organisational and cultural terms.”

Very few other details were provided by the company in terms of project details. In the initial announcement, they simply added, "Exploratory talks are already underway with international tech companies on initial projects.”

The Lab of the Future

This new lab is believed to be based in Wolfsburg, Germany, though offices will also be in Munich, Berlin and Palo Alto. It will operate independently from Volkswagen's main software unit in Cariad and be overseen by representatives from VW, Audi and Porche.

Cariad Group is currently in the midst of restructuring and is predicted to slash around 2,000 jobs in a move to cut costs.

VW is a giant in the industry, and any AI innovations from the think tank will be passed onto all of the brands within the Volkswagen Group to try to execute. This includes those mentioned above, along with Skoda and Seat brands.

On their AI news, the statement from the company also said that: “AI Lab will not manufacture production models but will serve as an incubator for the Volkswagen Group. The company will identify new product ideas connected with artificial intelligence throughout the world. AI Lab will then develop highly promising concepts together with partners where the need arises to produce early prototypes.

The company plans to bring digital products based on AI into the future of the group, which could be a big part of future plans relating to software. Their new AI lab within the group will be a way for some great minds to come up with new ideas and collaborate with outside partners in a way to try and bring their vehicle technology into the next age.
